After trying several services which submit a web site to tens, or even hundreds of search engines & directories (multi-submit) I came to the conclusion that these services don`t generate the desired effect
My submission never made it to most of the sites I intended, or my listing was so badly positioned that nobody would ever find my site with that search engine
Each search engine or directory, where these services submit too, uses a different form with different methods, it simply isn`t possible to submit & promote your site in an effective way with just one default-form to many engines. Not even with the commercial services, whatever they might promise
For the best results you should submit your site to the search engines by hand, one by one (there are however a few commercial services which submit your site by hand, without using a form or script, but these aren`t cheap, which is logical, because there`s a lot of work involved)
I
went to well over 1000 search engines, directories & linklists to figure
out what the best ones are. I filtered out the crap for you
Some
tips & tricks:
The title of your web site is very important. Most people will do a search and then quickly go through the titles that the search engine or directory has found. If your title isn`t interesting at first sight, or it is at the bottom of the list, or, even worse, on page 99, your web site will never be found by many people
The use of META-tags in your HTML-code is very important too
If you do use picture-links instead of text-links for your web site`s navigation, make sure to include the ALT tag, see below
<A HREF="page2.htm"><IMG SRC="page2.gif" ALT="Here you`ll write a short description about this link"></A>
Alta Vista (and some other search engines) use this text to rate and describe your site, especially if there are only picture-links on top of your pages
Some search engines show the results of a query in alfabetical order. You could start the title of your web page with a numeral or the letter 'A' (if you really want to compremise your title for the sake of having more visitors)
You get listed higher if you use relevant information in the header tags (<H1>, <H2>, <H3> etc., whereby <H1> is rated most important and <H6> least important), though I think search engines should modernize their software, because using header tags often makes your web site look ugly
If you make use of frames, make sure to include relevant keywords and a good description in the <NOFRAMES> tag. Only browsers which cann`t show frames will show what`s between <NOFRAMES> and </NOFRAMES>, so don`t hesitate to use <H1>, because some search engines cann`t index a frame document, but they wíll index what`s between <NOFRAMES> and </NOFRAMES>. An example of your frameset could be:
<FRAMESET
ROWS="*,85%" BORDER=0 FRAMEBORDER=0 FRAMEBORDER=NO FRAMESPACING=0>
<FRAME
NORESIZE SCROLLING="NO" SRC="aunav.htm">
<FRAMESET
COLS="*,77%" BORDER=0 FRAMEBORDER=0 FRAMEBORDER=NO FRAMESPACING=0>
<FRAME
NAME="left" SRC="left2.htm">
<FRAME
NAME="target page" SRC="main2.htm">
<NOFRAMES>

</NOFRAMES>
</FRAMESET>
</FRAMESET>
Still do include META tags in your frame document too, some search engines can only read what`s in the NOFRAMES-section, while others cann`t read that section, but instead of that they can read your META tags
Make sure you have something to offer people (really, nobody is interested in a home page about your cat or your family). What`s the use of doing all the effort to promote your web site, as a result of that have many visitors for 1 month, and then your statistics go down again, and these visitors, who didn`t like your site (or cat), will NEVER come back
The same goes for the use of misleading keywords: you`ll maybe get many visitors for a short periode of time, but these visitors will never come back to your site, not even if it later does get worth looking at. And if a seach engine finds that you`re trying t mislead its visitors, you might get removed from that index and put on a black list
Lately, some search engines have taken a new approach: if your web site is linked a lot on other pages, you`ll autimatically get listed higher
Create a text-file in a word processor that contains your name, e-mail adress, your site's title, your site`s URL (adress, like http://www...), a short description, a longer description, relevant keywords, and a list of URL`s for those engines which allow you to submit more as one page. Have this text-file open at the same time that you`re are doing your submissions, then just copy and paste the data into the submission forms
Take your time to prepare yourself and always carefully read the instructions of that particular search engine or directory
DO NOT post to FFA (Free For All) sites, if you don`t want to receive lots and lots of unwanted e-mail (SPAM)
It
might take from some weeks up to several months (or even longer) before
your submission appears at some of the very busy search engines or directories
